$13M Award in Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuit
September 18, 2017
Alameda, CA A $12,958,461 verdict has been awarded against The Hillshire Brands Company in a products liability suit alleging asbestos contamination resulting in death from
asbestos mesothelioma.
The lawsuit was filed by Lanette Louise Lopez on behalf of Mark Lopez, who died at the age of 61 after developing asbestos mesothelioma. According to the complaint, Lopez lived in employee housing owned by The Hillshire Brands Company from 1954 to 1972. Lopez’ s father worked in Hillshire's refinery for over 40 years.
According to the lawsuit, Hillshire employees routinely worked with asbestos, without safety precautions, such that the refinery, the surrounding area, and the company homes, which were located just a few hundred yards from Hillshire's sugar refinery, were contaminated.
The lawsuit claimed that refinery workers unknowingly took asbestos home on their clothes, exposing their families. And that due to his exposure to asbestos fibers on his father’s clothing, and from the refinery, Mark Lopez developed fatal asbestos mesothelioma.
