School Asbestos
September 21, 2007
New Canaan, CT: (Sep-20-07) The town of New Canaan brought a lawsuit against Brooks Laboratories, alleging that it was responsible for the asbestos discovered while renovating the New Canaan High School. Brooks Laboratories was among the four defendants that the town named in the suit. The charges stated that Brooks Laboratories prepared the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) report for the school building committee.
In a settlement reached, Brooks Laboratories agreed to pay slightly more than $1.8 million to resolve its stake in the four-defendant case, and admitted to no wrongdoing. The company's settlement payment is the entire amount available in its professional liability insurance policy. Brooks's spokesperson stated that the town could hope to see $1 million from the deal after consulting, accounting and legal bills.
