Asbestos Cleanup
May 22, 2008
Erie, PA: (May-19-08) The city of Erie and the Erie Sewer Authority brought charges against Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), seeking the removal of asbestos-lined underground steam lines in downtown Erie as part of the 2005 lawsuit. In the suit, the city and the Sewer Authority said the lines posed a danger to city workers and residents, and they demanded $254,500 to cover costs, including the disposal of the line and the redesign of the sewer route.
The dispute stemmed after a contractor mistakenly dug up a steam line during a sewer project. As part of a recently agreed upon settlement, Penelec has agreed to pay $27,500. Three other defendants named in the dispute, who were involved in installing the sewer line, will pay $16,666 each, to resolve litigation.
